The first edition of the symposium “Arts-Sciences: Zones of Indiscernibility,” organized by the ICB Laboratory in partnership with the Dijon National School of Art and Design, was held from March 12 to 14, 2025, at Polytech Dijon. The event brought together more than 60 participants and resulted in some twenty presentations exploring the many intersections between arts and sciences.
A Dialogue Between Two Worlds
For three days, researchers, artists, and philosophers exchanged ideas on the concepts of language, method, objectivity, and the senses. Through presentations and discussions, they attempted to map these spaces where the boundaries between art and science become blurred, thus revealing their full creative potential.
The symposium offered a diversity of approaches, ranging from theoretical reflections to concrete collaborative projects. Some presentations highlighted how scientific and artistic approaches can mutually enrich each other, while others explored the tensions and misunderstandings that can arise from this encounter.
In addition to the academic discussions, sculptor Emmaly and “ZONI,” the symposium’s flagship work, were given free rein. This provided a unique opportunity to experience these dialogues in a visual and sensory form.
The event also allowed participants from outside the ICB to visit two of its technological platforms: SMARTLIGHT and ARCEN-Carnot. These visits offered a glimpse into the cutting-edge technologies developed within the laboratory, concretely illustrating the potential connections between scientific research and artistic creation.
A Promising First Edition
The success of this first edition testifies to the growing interest in these spaces where art and science intersect. Participants praised the richness of the discussions and the quality of the presentations. Given this enthusiasm, the ICB Laboratory is already planning to repeat the experience and continue exploring these hybrid territories.
